Read the review that Autoweek just did on the Mazda 2. You might rethink your decision.

Autoblog just posted a blog poll about the Mazda2 versus the Fiesta.
Judging from the results, it looks like the Fiesta is commanding a good lead. |

Sounds really good, I will have to test drive both to see which one offers the best ride. Also, it's good to know that the Mazda2 received a 5 star crash test rating by NCAP.

Today's episode of Motorweek (Episode 2947) on PBS featured a review of the Mazda 2. They seemed to like it but whenever there was a comparison to be made between the Mazda 2 and the Fiesta (engine, fit/finish, cargo room) the Fiesta always came out better.
I haven't found anywhere online that you can view the episode yet.

So out of curiosity and in the interest of "shopping around" Myself and my girlfriend decided to go to a mazda dealership and check out the 2's.
First impression... "Whoa crap, the print material does not do that green justice". After the initial shock, the vibrance of the colour wore off and I looked around and sat in the car a little just a few things came to mind. - back seat is not as well thought out as the fiesta with the slight recess in the front seats to give taller people knee room. - the dash mounted shifter A la 2003 civic SIR (and the various other vehicles that have done it) felt good, but the clutch had absolutely no resistance, and in turn just felt springy? I'd have to see how it felt in a test drive. - fit and finish felt nice, and solid considering the fact it's lighter then the fiesta. -and whoa is that one fairly well thought out engine bay, even more sparse than the fiesta with lots of room to look, and work around in. everything seemed to be within easy access, and what wasn't you could at least see around to figure out a way to work with it. |

I had the opportunity to park next to a new Mazda2 yesterday in blue. I originally was going to purchase one before I even saw it but I have to say I am glad I decided on Fiesta as far as looks and initial impression of the outside appearance. It looked like a very cheaply made car and from head on I couldn't help but think it looked like a clown should be driving it in a parade. The look of the front grille reminds me of a big smile and I just thought the thing looked goofy. I didn't want the owner to see me looking inside so through quick glance the interior looked cheap with the red edging on the seats and I don't know what kind of model it was but the inside gadgetry looked very sparce and cheap. I have not test driven one since I changed my mind on the Fiesta so I can't attest for how the drive is but I would have to get over the fact that I felt like I was a shriner before I would consider this model.

I considered the Mazda 2 briefly. I looked at the company website for it, read and watched reviews, and compared it to the Fiesta. It's not as well equipped, looks silly, and reviewers just don't seem to find much exciting to say about it. There's little comparison to me.

I think the Mazda2 is a really good car. As is the Fit. The problem is, is that they have to compete with the Fiesta, which seems just that much better.
If the Fiesta wasn't around, I think all of these cars would rate higher on people's "consider" list. But, the Fiesta is one of those times that a car really stands out against the competition. I will be eager to see 6-9 months of sales data for all of the b-segment cars to see just how the public is voting with their wallets though. |
